Sometimes I enjoy the snowflake challenges, even though I'm not participating.. maybe I'll try that sometime.
Times go well enough in their own ways. Studying math. Applying for jobs. Wondering why everyone is ok with my life going the ways that it is, per usual.
Difficult to read posts here a lot of the time. I like the short and brief style of posting, but most people here post long stuff. If I find stuff not written in English, even if it is long, I often enjoy running it through a translation engine, to see what's happening in/with other languages and translation, so much fun!!!
I am at a loss with myself about how I feel on languages some days. I love when there are more than one ways to write and say things. When you run something through an engine, and get a word that isn't exactly English, like the name of a person for example, I tend to consider.. it sorta could be translated... but short handing is rather disrespectful, so I understand that.. and it gives a flavor of where the post originated.
It gets complicated, because having more than one language means barriers in people talking. Why wouldn't just one language be suitable? Oh, how drab.. but the dilemmas of lack of communication are not nice either.. though if people lost the ability to see how flexible language can be at all, which comes with multilingualism, I would say... doesn't sound great either. I would love to have conversations about this.

Date: 2024-02-06 07:05 pm (UTC)In learning Japanese.. there would regularly be a sensation of: "You can't translate the feeling that the translator is going through, to express what they are. " You can translate the words... but the amount of effort it takes to get to a sentence in a second language is a euphoric feeling of accomplishment. You can be sad, and express sadness, but you lose the sadness in the joy of what you found. ...which sometimes looks more like sadness in what you lost to find it.
I remember that old question about HTML being a programming language or not, which I think is still up for debate. When I see HTML users.. I say to myself: "these folks at least semi understand the value of language to a level greater than a monolingual person." ..but I don't look at HTML like I look at Japanese at all. The transformations of information are so very different. You're not changing the sounds or images.. I guess you could be.
